Not the upgrade we were hoping for: The Mac Mini reviewed | Ars Technica

This looks promising. Have you had any complicated driver issues? How long are you using it? I can't promise that video editing apps will work with the GPUs as well, but games and rendering apps do. In Windows there are some people struggeling that the card is detected, but most of them made it work.

I never had problems with driver, just some freezes after changing from using it on the external to the internal monitor. But that is solved after another reboot. My goal is kind of both. I'm doing gaming, photography and video cutting. Alle for fun and just as an hobby but still I want to do my best I can do.

External Graphics card over Thunderbolt Suggestions

I thought for somewhen in the future to put a 4K screen on it and turn the external GPU on when I'm doing something that needs a little bit more power and for the other times use it with the internal graphics. I saw on the Forum you have a lot of experience ;- and you did some extra work for better cooling etc. Could the AKiTiO case also be used just an "plug and play" after doing the scripts and driver and so on? The AKiTiO is not plug and play. That is because it's power supply is way to weak and it doesn't have the extra power plugs to power beefy graphics cards.

That power issue seems not to be too complicated. I have the Mac Mini and that seems to work with 4K. Thank you for the advices! You were really helpful. Now waiting for the next paycheck and off we go! Adrian Jimenez. Thats awesome but I am fighting to solve a problem which mentioned Niklas: " Apple is limiting 4k displays by only making the 60Hz I know my TV supports it, the cables and of course the graphic card.

RAM fixation

I initially wanted the underside of the Mac mini to face outwards and without the bottom cover for better air flow read: to look cool. This placement did not work very well due to the hidden location of the Power button.

Placing the Mac mini with the Apple logo face outwards provides easier access to the Power button. In order to install automate-eGPU. This external GPU setup has worked surprisingly well. Join our forum for latest Thunderbolt 3 eGPU development. I received many requests for additional photos of this eGPU setup. There were also questions about running it with a non-watercooled GPU. This is fascinating and kinda cool. I have that same mac mini, currently pulling duty as a Kodi Box, and Openemu for game emulation. So how are you getting this to work? How is the heat output on your Mini when in this case? How noisy is the unit using the R9 Fury Nitro? I will be rebuilding the OS from scratch its long over due , which I am hoping will reset the fan issue. Heat and noise from the Mac mini is not a concern at all. The GPU itself is the loudest and hottest component of this whole setup. Hi, great setup. Is a power supply required?

How to Use External GPU with Older Mac Mini

Once again, great setup! Hi there, Thank you for the insightful sharing and I am terribly tempted to build an eGPU for my mac mini i7 2. I have been realising for quite a while that the limitation in my video editing working flow is the very limited GPU Intel HD Graphics 1. I am also a lucky owner of quad core i7 mac mini late , If i install windows in it through bootcamp , can I still use this eGPU in my mac mini for windows?

Im new to this EGPU thing…. I have a Mac Mini i7. Now that High Sierra supports eGPUs specified list , are the options for which egpu and enclosure more than what is recommended on this post? This seems like it will solve my problems for under 1K! Thanks so much! There is a reason why I bought a Mac, it was not to be one of the cool kids that wanted the best of the best.

No it was because of the music production I do on it. Hours and hours sitting in front of my Mac copying, pasting, moving, deleting, hour after hour just beating on my Mac in a endless assault to get my work done. That is the key part, my work. I work from home, it is great, but even if it is from home it is still work and it still needs to get done. Great post! Do you think it is possible to pairing it with an eGPU instead of throwing my mac mini into the garbage? Can you let me know what items I would need to purchase for a Mac Mini late i5 2.
